Rotary club of Imphal was founded on 31st October, 1973, and chartered on 12th April, 1974. Rotary Club of Imphal (Club No. 16174) is under Rotary International District (RID) 3240. RID 3240 comprises of 110 number of clubs covering the areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and eight revenue districts of West Bengal. It is one of the largest RID in India. Rotary Club of Imphal has 119 members and is the largest club in RID 3240 member wise. RC Imphal was founded with 27 charter members and it is a matter of pride that we still have few charter members. It is the generosity, sincerity and nobleness of our founder members that the club despite the many challenges it faced especially during the initial years has not only progressed but can be considered as an epitome of “Service Above Self”. They truly believed in the joy of giving.
In the initial days, Rotary Club of Imphal did not have any permanent location for conduct of its regular meetings and met wherever suitable and convenient places like hotels. Rotary Club of Imphal is thankful to Rotarians, Rtn. Om Prakash Agarwal, Rtn. Krishna Narayan Agarwal and Rtn. Ramesh Kumar Agarwal, who were gracious and noble enough to donate the land at Mantripukhri on which the present Rotary Bhavan stands. Upon completion of the building, all Rotary meetings are held in the premise.
Over the years the club has been led by numerous presidents and secretaries and credit goes to all of them for bringing glory and laurels to the club. It also goes without saying that the contribution and co-operation of every Rotarian were sine qua non to the progress of the club. They include illustrious businessman and industrialist, high ranking government officials, prominent doctors, engineers, lawyers, social workers etc. Despite the huge numbers, becoming a member of RC Imphal is however not just a walk in the park. While the club looks forward to adding in the member’s list, it ensures that only those who possess the spirit of a Rotarian is inducted as a member. Attendance as guest for a couple of meeting is considered a necessity and then the induction is formally approved by the Board of Directors and the Club. Induction as a member is also proposed by one of the active member of the club.
Attendance during the regular weekly meeting (RWM) is encouraged by acknowledging the same in the monthly “MANIPADMA” publication and also with gifts as a token of appreciation. RC Imphal also takes pride in the presence of a Past District Governor namely Rtn. Ajit Irom (2009-2010) and 5 Assistant Governors amongst its members.
It is only the generosity and benevolence of its members that it has been able to take up so many projects and make a positive impact in the community. In case, the club considers any specific project worthy, voluntary contributions by its members till the budgeted requirement is met. As the joke goes, once we join rotary, we have opened a "DENA" bank implying Giving is the way forward. The club takes pride in sharing that over the last half a century it has contributed $ 176445 to TRF (The Rotary Foundation), have 64 PHF (Paul Harris Fellow) and 7 Major Donors till now.
